Why Polystyrene Insulation Shouldn't Be Used In Concrete Soffits
Thermoplastics soften and melt
Polystyrene products, such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) are considered thermoplastics. Thermoplastic materials soften and melt when heated and, as the pictures clearly show, can present a significant fire safety risk when installed in soffit applications.
Kingspan’s Kooltherm range does not melt
The Kingspan Kooltherm product range is a rigid cellular insulation that is a thermoset material, rather than thermoplastic, which means it does not melt when heated.
Demand FM Global approval
Factory Mutual (FM) Global is an international property insurance and loss prevention engineering company operating in more than 100 countries. Recognised and respected across the globe, FM Global’s FM Approval third-party certification assures building owners a product has been objectively tested and conforms to the highest national and international fire standards.
Kingspan’s Kooltherm K10 G2 Soffit Board has been awarded FM Approval in soffit applications* so you can have peace of mind when specifying this product, while achieving thermal insulation requirements in a thin profile.
* FM Approval Class 4880 Class 1 valid for ceiling/soffit installation, with non-combustible walls. Please contact us for correct installation instructions.
Demand CodeMark certification
CodeMark is considered the building industry’s highest level of product conformance. Kingspan Kooltherm K10 G2 Soffit Board is the only rigid soffit insulation product in Australia to achieve CodeMark certification (at time of printing), delivering independently-certified compliance to the NCC and total peace of mind to you.
Kingspan Insulation is unaware as to the cause of the fire in the photographs. The images are indicative of the propensity of thermoplastics such as polystyrene to soften and melt when heated. The Kingspan Koolthem range will not melt.
