Installing Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board in walls is a practical way to help meet 7 Star energy efficiency, particularly for framed construction.

Why choose Kingspan Kooltherm K12?

Kooltherm K12 offers several benefits for achieving energy efficiency and compliance with Australian building standards:

  • Space-saving efficiency: with one of the thinnest profiles for a given R-value for any commonly used insulation, Kooltherm K12 enables slimmer wall constructions, therefore more usable interior space.
  • Low smoke: K12’s thermoset phenolic material chars in a fire, releasing minimal smoke compared to thermoplastics such as polystyrene.
  • Third-party certification: K12 is CodeMark-certified for compliance with National Construction Code (NCC).
  • Energy star ratings: ideal for constructing 7+ Star energy-efficient homes for reducing heating and cooling demands.
  • Perfect fit for insulation in-between framed construction: The 80mm Kooltherm K12 is designed to fit into a 90mm standard timber wall frame and delivers a thermal efficiency R-value of R3.60.

Here’s how to install Kooltherm K12 step by step – use our 80mm board to achieve R3.60 in a standard 90mm wall frame.

Tools and materials you’ll need

Before starting, gather these essential items:

  • Kooltherm K12 Framing Board
  • Fine-tooth hand saw
  • Square edge for precise cutting
  • Foam gun and solvent
  • 1 can of HB Fuller FulaFoam Pro per home
  • Glasswool insulation for filling small voids around services
Installation Instructions
Step 1: Select and insert the Kooltherm K12 batt

Kooltherm K12 comes in multiple widths to match standard stud frame dimensions.

  1. Measure the wall cavity between the stud frames. Choose a Kooltherm K12 of the appropriate width for the cavity (there are four width sizes available)
  2. Insert the full-size Kooltherm K12 into the wall cavity between the stud frames.
  3. Insert the batt snugly into the wall cavity. The batt should fit flush against the stud frames without bending or leaving gaps.
Step 2: Fill gaps at the top (noggin)

After inserting the full-size batt, you may notice a gap between the batt’s top edge and the noggin (horizontal framing piece).

  1. Cut an offcut from a Kooltherm K12 batt using a fine-tooth saw and a square edge.
  2. Insert the offcut into the gap to ensure complete insulation coverage.
Step 3: Seal vertical gaps

If there are any gaps along the vertical edges of the batt:

  1. Apply HB Fuller FulaFoam Pro to seal the gaps.
  2. Use a foam gun for precision and ensure the foam expands to fill the space completely.
Step 4: Fill small voids and areas around services

Small voids, particularly those around pipes, electrical conduits or other services, can compromise insulation performance.

  1. Use glasswool insulation to fill these spaces.
  2. Ensure a snug fit around services to prevent air leaks and maintain thermal performance.
Final tips for a professional finish
  • Quality control: check that all insulation is flush with the studs, leaving no visible gaps. Proper installation avoids thermal bridges and ensures the insulation performs to its full R-value.
  • Safety first: always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling insulation materials.
  • Planning for 7 Star energy rating: pair Kooltherm K12 with other appropriate energy-efficient measures such as double-glazed windows and airtight construction for optimal results.

By following these steps carefully, you’ll help ensure new homes comply with energy-efficient building standards, and occupants will enjoy the long-term benefits of reduced heating and cooling costs. With Kooltherm K12, achieving a 7 Star energy rating has never been easier or more effective.
