Introduction
The transport sector plays a crucial role in global trade. Around 80% of worldwide goods are transported by ships*, which offer one of the most cost-effective and efficient means of transport.
Like most industries, shipping is setting ambitious environmental targets to reduce its carbon footprint and overall impact on both air and sea water quality.
In most cases, this involves moving away from Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Marine Fuel Oil (MFO), which have a significant environmental impact, and converting to cleaner alternative fuels such as ammonia and LNG. Moreover, tanker ships are increasingly used to supply and trade ammonia and LNG worldwide, with demand expected to rise.
Both LNG and Ammonia are stored at low or even cryogenic temperatures to maintain their liquid state, reducing storage space requirements. This creates a need for high-quality insulation to maintain these temperatures and minimise product loss due to gas boil-off.
Kingspan Technical Insulation is proud to announce that Kingspan Tarecpir M1-CR has been certified to the Marine Equipment Directive (MED). Tarecpir M1-CR, when used with stainless steel cladding, is now approved for cold and cryogenic insulation in shipbuilding applications under the Wheelmark certification.

Tarecpir M1-CR
Tarecpir M1-CR consists of a polyisocyanurate (PIR) rigid foam insulation core and is supplied with a triplex vapour barrier. The foam core is available in various densities, depending on the intended use. With our long experience in land based systems, we can produce a fitting insulation system for virtually every shape and size of pipework or tank.
To comply with the MED, a stainless steel cladding with a thickness ≤=0.5 mm should be applied after installing the insulation. The use of bands for mounting the cladding is recommended.
Different Densities for Different Applications
Tarecpir M1-CR can be supplied in a range of densities:
- 33 kg - Suitable for ammonia fuel and refrigeration systems. Excellent thermal properties ensure low heat gain throughout the pipework and tanks.
- 42 kg - Designed for cryogenic applications. Low thermal conductivity and mechanically capable of withstanding the forces induced by the exposure to extreme low temperatures such as needed for LNG.
- 50 kg - For cyclic cryogenic installations, such as loading lines, the 50 kg density product is designed to withstand the force cycles of changing temperatures. The enhanced compressive and tensile strength increases the lifetime and constant performance under these severe conditions.
