Kingspan Therma Duct Insulation has been installed on new external ductwork at St James’s Hospital as part of a programme of improvement work supporting Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust’s efforts to achieve net zero operational carbon emissions by 2040.
As one of the UK’s largest NHS trusts, the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust is committed to reducing its impact on the environment. The Trust has been overseeing a wide range of improvement works across its sites to allow it to meet the NHS Carbon Footprint targets – requiring the NHS as a whole to be net zero for all emissions they control by 2040 and net zero for all emissions they can influence by 2045.
Ongoing work at St James’s Hospital has included linking buildings to a new low-carbon district heating network, installing low-energy lighting, fitting double glazing and making improvements to building insulation, including insulation around building services. As part of improvements to the ventilation system, DPL Insulation used Kingspan Therma Duct Insulation to lag new external ductwork subsequently applying a weatherproof finish.

Therma Duct is a high-performance insulation which is designed for use on rectangular, circular and flat oval ductwork installed externally on a building. Suitable for use on both new build and refurbishment projects, its fibre free rigid thermoset PIR insulation core makes it well suited for outdoor ductwork applications.
The rigid nature of the boards also supported the on-site installation by DPL Insulation, allowing the specified thicknesses to be maintained at corners in the rectangular ductwork. The vapour barrier tape could then be easily applied to the flat insulation face, allowing the creation of a continuous and fully sealed vapour barrier.
These installation benefits were especially helpful on the application at St James’s Hospital with the work carried out in high winds as company director, Scott Lightowler, discussed:
“The weather is one of the biggest challenges we face on external applications. This job was certainly one of the tougher installations due to the strong winds. However, the Therma Duct boards are straightforward to fit and our installers were able to use their experience to overcome the challenges and get the work completed.”
