When choosing to install a warm roof system, it is important to ensure you are using a product that can comply with the standards set by the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC).
The Therma range covers flat roof (Therma TR27 and Therma TR28) and tapered roof (Therma TT47) applications. It is specified in fully warranted proprietary roofing systems.
Kingspan Insulation's Therma range are rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) thermoset insulation, manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and low Global Warming Potential and offers an easy, continuous insulation solution. No chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) or hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) is used in the manufacture of Kingspan’s Therma range. Using Kingspan Therma range will contribute to New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) Homestar and Greenstar points.
Designing with a proprietary warm roof system offers peace of mind that your roof is waterproof, structurally sound and effective. By specifying warm roof insulation through a fully designed proprietary system, you are ensuring all components are compliant and installed as per the required standards. Systems can be designed in membrane finish for very low pitch roofs, or with a profiled metal finish for roofs above 3 degrees. Acoustic boards can be added to mitigate rain noise etc according to your design requirements.
“Kingspan PIR is used in New Zealand’s leading proprietary warm roof systems. The proprietary system providers have undergone internal and external compliance testing to ensure that all components are compatible and compliant as an entire system. This simplifies specification and compliance pathways and provides confidence in design” commented Victoria Elvin, General Manager, Building Technology and Technical Services, Kingspan Insulation
Therma TR27 and TT47 have a coated glass tissue face for the board and are suitable for use with most bitumen based and mastic asphalt waterproofing systems.
Therma TR28 has gas tight reflective aluminium foil facers and this enables the board to achieve a higher R-Value per thickness than TR27, enabling thinner roof construction. The foil facers of TR28 can be bonded with most cold applied synthetic self-adhesive roof membranes and two-layer torch on bitumen membrane systems using a (partially) self-adhered bonded roofing membrane and torched on top sheet. Both TR27 and TR28 can also be used with mechanically fixed membranes.
Creating a tapered roofing structure is simple when using Therma TT47. It creates both the fall in the roof and provides thermal value. Traditional screed techniques to create fall require drying time and clear weather periods and can add significant weight to the building. The additional weight of the screed can be an issue in design where the weight cannot be accommodated in the balcony or roof area.
The weight of Therma boards is easy to handle and is fitted with a dry installation process. This can reduce project timescales when compared with wet approaches such as screed to fall which can take 195 days, or more, to dry.
Kingspan’s Therma products are tested to AS/NZS 4859.1.2018 which takes into account the effects of ageing. As a result, Therma is proven to maintain thermal performance and effectiveness throughout its lifespan. Using other non-continuous solutions can result in a thermal bridge which, in turn, can lead to problems of condensation and mould growth.
Thermal efficiency aside, warm roof systems can be easily retrofitted to existing roof structures. In buildings such as hospitals, schools, aged care facilities and residential, this could eliminate the need for relocation during the renovations as it does not require demolition of the existing roof. Retrofitting a warm roof over an existing roof ensures the building envelope is maintained during construction and can reduce the impact of untimely weather events. It may allow tenants and users of the building to carry on with little to no impact.
