Field of direct application

The field of direct application defines the permissible variations that can be introduced to a tested specimen without requiring further testing or assessment. These modifications can be directly applied to tested systems and are generally considered conservative.

Please note that any number of these variations can be considered at the same time.

Height: the maximum permitted construction height is 4 m.

Width: the width of the construction can be increased without limitation.

Wall thickness: the minimum required thickness of the wall is 246 mm, with allowance for increased overall thickness.

Component thickness: the thickness of individual components, including gypsum boards, steel studs, calcium silicate-based cementitious boards, and stone mineral wool insulation, may be increased.

Board and panel sizes: the tested dimensions of the board and panel components were as follows. The length and width of these boards / panels may be reduced, provided they maintain the same material properties and installation details.

Item

Tested size

Gypsum boards

2400 mm long x 1200 mm wide

Calcium silicate boards

2400 mm long x 1200 mm wide

K-Roc mineral fibre

1200 mm long x 600 mm wide

Stud spacing: the maximum stud spacing is 600 mm, but reduction in spacing is permitted.

Fixing centers: the distance between fixings may be reduced for the following fixings:

  • Internal gypsum plasterboard to steel studs
  • External gypsum plasterboard to steel studs or internal plasterboard
  • Calcium silicate boards to steel studs
  • K-Roc mineral fibre to steel studs

Joints:

  • Horizontal joints are permitted when installing gypsum plasterboard and calcium silicate boards, provided that treatment, fixing, and construction remain unchanged.
  • Vertical joints are also permitted under the same conditions.

Supporting construction: the test results are applicable to high-density rigid supporting constructions that have at least the same fire resistance as the tested specimen.

Steel framing: alternative metal stud framing from another supplier can be used providing the grade, size and stud spacing is not changed.

Any variations to the tested system beyond those outlined above can be considered as part of a technical fire assessment prepared in accordance with the PFPF Guidelines.
