House-within-a-house

Kooltherm K108 Cavity Board has been installed as part of the Great Yorkshire Build charity initiative to provide a bespoke rebound therapy centre at the Brooklands School.
The SEND school provides specialist facilities for pupils aged between 4-19 with a range of complex needs. The state-of-the-art therapy building will house a number of trampolines, allowing students to take part in fun, therapeutic exercise which can also help them to develop their coordination and alleviate anxiety.
The Great Yorkshire Build initiative has been developed by the Yorkshire Children’s Charity to transform the facilities at SEND schools across the region, giving pupils access to the equipment and resources they need to reach their full potential. GMI Construction Group provided its services for free and handled different stages of the build. Many of the building materials, including the Kooltherm K108 used in the walls of the rebound therapy centre, have also been provided free of charge.
The work has also included the refurbishment of several key classroom spaces and the construction of a multi-sensory room.
In addition to delivering high quality facilities for students, the scheme has been designed to limit ongoing operational costs for the school. For this reason, the project team adopted a fabric-first approach for the centre, using Kooltherm K108 within the blockwork cavity walls.
On the centre, a 75 mm thickness was fitted with a 50 mm cavity. This allowed the walls to achieve a U-value of 0.18 W/m2K with a total cavity depth of just 125 mm, maximising the floor space without compromising on thermal performance.
To support project teams, Kingspan Insulation has produced guides covering indicative Psi-values for the use of Kooltherm K108. This guidance covers the majority of common junction types and can support projects to meet the tougher energy efficiency requirements within the updated version of Part L to the Building Regulations (England & Wales) and Section 6 (Scotland).
